Permanent Account Number (PAN). It is a ten digit alpha numeric character issued by the Indian Income Tax, department as an identity to any Individual. It is given by Indian Govt. to recognize their Identity as a citizen of India .
You are required to mention PAN during any financial transactions right from opening a bank account to receiving of income from sources like salary, professional fees, Passport, e-ticket, etc.
It is mandatory to quote PAN number on return of income, with any income tax authority and challans for any payments due to Income Tax Department.
It is also compulsory to quote PAN in all documents pertaining to economic or financial transactions notified from time-to-time by the Central Board of Direct Taxes.
Some transactions like sale and purchase of property or motor vehicle or payments to hotels for bills or payments in cash, of amounts exceeding Rs.25,000/-, in connection with travel to any foreign country.
It is also mandatory to mention PAN for obtaining a telephone or cellular telephone connection.

There is no any minimum and maximum age limit. Any person, who intends to enter into economic or financial transactions where quoting PAN is mandatory, must also obtain PAN.

How can we apply PAN through application Form 49A? and pan card status
PAN application can be made only on Form 49A. A PAN application (Form 49A) can be downloaded from the website of Income Tax department or UTIISL or NSDL (www.incometaxindia.gov.in,www.utiisl.co.in ortin.nsdl.com) or obtained from any other source. The form is also available at IT PAN Service centers and TIN Facilitation centers.
Documents and information that have to be submitted along with the application for Form 49A:
- Individual applicants will have to affix one recent, colored photograph (Stamp Size) on Form 49A;
Proof of 'Identity' and ‘Address’ in case of Individual applicants:
Copy of school leaving certificate or matriculation certificate or degree of a recognized educational institution or depository account or Credit card or Bank account or Water bill or Ration card or Property tax assessment order or Passport or Voter identity card or Driving license or certificate of identity signed by a Gazetted Officer.
In case the PAN applicant is a minor, any of above documents of any of the parents or guardian of such minor shall serve as proof of Identity.
The charges for applying for PAN online are the same i.e. rs. 94 (including service tax) for Indian communication address and Rs.744 (including service tax) for foreign communication address, i.e. there are no additional charges.
Payment of application fee can be made through credit/debit card or net-banking. Once the application and payment is accepted, the applicant is required to send the supporting documents through courier/post to NSDL/UTITSL. Only after the receipt of the documents, PAN application would be processed by NSDL/UTITSL.
